"This one required some light treading. I wanted this design to pay tribute to history without triggering emotions of hate and oppression. I felt that a blue St. Andrews cross on red field without white outlines and stars would recognize the state's history without being offensive. My argument to this is that Alabama also uses a St. Andrews cross, albiet in a different color scheme, and as far as I could tell, it is not regarded as controversial. The focal point however, is an idea loosely inspired by the Hong Kong flag. The center icon is a white magnolia (the state flower) with a blue star in the center. I hope I succeeded in creating a flag for Mississippi that all its state's citizens can agree on."
