Flag proposal for Rhode Island by FlagFreak, from Originally uploaded on 20 May 2007.

Original description:

"This Rhode Island flag design took a while to come up with, but I think it's pretty good. The anchor is a symbol of Rhode Island, and is currently on the official Rhode Island flag design. The purple background represents the state's state flower, the Rhode Island violet. The red stripe and the five-pointed star represent Rhode Island becoming the 13th state to enter the Union. The red stripe and the white star on the United States flag that represent Rhode Island appear in the same positions on this Rhode Island flag design.

The current Rhode Island flag is bad, in my opinion, but I don't think it is as horrible as, let's say, Nebraska's. The bad part is that the flag has a white background, but the main elements of the flag are yellow. Yellow on white is bad, as it's quite hard to see. Get it? Also, the state's motto appears on a blue banner under the main element, a ship's anchor. The motto is "HOPE". It's short, but it's still lettering, and that's not good on the flag unless the lettering is big and reads correctly on both sides of the flag, like "MOM", "YAY", "WOW", "MA'AM", and some other ones (trust me, those are not easy to come up with)."
