Rationale: The three alternating triangles represent the three main divisions of Tennessee - East, Middle and West. Winding between the divisions is the River Tennessee itself. On each triangle is placed the purple passionflower, the first state flower, to show the common identity of all three divisions. The design is counter-changed accordingly.
